Unique Sound Design for ON

We worked with French director Aurélien Heilbronn on a branded campaign for ON’s new waterproof collection. We worked as music supervisors to create this unique soundtrack for motion pictures was a captivating piece of work. In a deep and introspective atmosphere, a man remembers and visualises a past love as if it were a dream. Like any dream, this one is fictitious, our character is both happy to see this person but it also plunges him into dark thoughts because this happy past is over.

the challenge

Our challenge was to express the deepest and most authentic human feelings that are sorrow, hopes and doubts through sound design elements. Early on, we agreed that we would not develop a conventional score that would be made of music like you hear anywhere else. Our goal was to create an immersive environnement through sound that would highlight a super organic environment (i.e. the rain and thunder) and should express this overall balance between sadness and hopefulness.

the approach

We initially agreed on a few references to draw the main melody line and the type of notes we wanted to hear: keys, length, tempo… From then on, we cut the movie frame by frame to describe what we wanted to create sound-wise for every moment. To maintain our motto which was to create an organic environment for the sound, we decided to use heartbeats for the rhythmic base. At the same time, one of the key guidelines was to express how robust the products are through the usage of distinct industrial sounds.

the solution

Together with our composer Robert Dietz (Studio Teiwas) we worked closely to create this unique piece of sound design. In particular, we decided that the woman and the man should have their respective themes and that the two should ultimately merge from the moment they appear on screen together. The grand finale with the outro was in itself a beautiful piece of work with the re-introduction of thunder when the logo appears together with a woosh to close the film.
